Getting your home “guest-ready” ahead of time can make the
difference between having a fabulous or frustrating weekend. Here are some ideas that will make guests never want to leave. But, if that’s not your goal, just enjoy the read.
Sweet dreams
Space can be at a premium when guests come to stay. After all, who doesn’t mind giving up their home office, extra closet space or man-cave for a visiting BFF? One no-fuss option is to install a Murphy or custom wall bed. Pull it down for sleeping, then tuck it away during the day. A word to the wise…get advice from an expert before you select the mattress. A memory-foam mattress might be too heavy, and its weight may prohibit the mechanism from balancing properly. In addition there is little structure within the mattress itself, and this lack of support can result in it slouching or buckling when stored in the upright position.
Plan your space
Consider maximizing your vertical space by installing cabinetry from floor to ceiling. Conceal hanging garments in tall cupboards and use built-in drawers for everything else. With careful space planning, you will be able to fit in a desk and some office storage, too.
If the sofa is your only option for overnight guests, your best option is a pull-out sofa bed. Available now in single sizes that can tuck into an ample chair or small loveseat, they’re as comfortable as they are attractive. A well-constructed sofa can double-up as a great spot for lounging, entertaining or napping after a long day.
A hint of lavender
Always treat your guests to fresh linen and fluffy comforters, and spoil them with plenty of soft pillows. After all, you want them to remember your home as the place where they had a restful night’s sleep. Store bed linen with essential oils or dryer sheets to keep it smelling fresh after laundering. I also like to put together a fulsome basket of clean, soft towels and essential toiletries before my guests arrive. Tuck in a short list of must-have information such as your Wi-Fi name and password, emergency contacts and a corkscrew. Yes, and don’t forget a nice bottle of wine and glasses.
Have an assortment of current books and magazines near the bed for guests who either struggle to fall asleep or wake at the crack of dawn. A good reading light by the bed and a night light in the bathroom will make things easier, too.
Night-time nibbles
Build in a coffee/snack station with a collection of coffee, tea and cocoa, mugs, spoons and napkins. If you have the space for a small bar fridge in the room, stock it with cold beverages, milk, cream and goodies for an extra-special touch.
Legend has it that while staying at the Mayfair Hotel, a famous actor asked the butler to place a trail of chocolates to lead his lady friend from the door to the bed. Intrigued by his creativity, the staff started leaving a chocolate on the pillow for every new guest. Copy the idea or, for a little more fun, how about placing retro candy necklaces or a packet of sweet tarts on your guests’ pillows for a nostalgic touch?
